The project, called "UPNA Green Smart & Sustainable Campus", aims to turn the Public University of Navarra (UPNA) into a sustainable and intelligent campus. To achieve this, around 7,000 photovoltaic panels have been connected to the power grid, the aim being to reduce the consumption of primary energy from non-renewable sources by more than 30%.
In addition, in 2024 a battery system to store surplus electrical power is planned. The project includes the installation of approximately 3.5 MW of peak power from photovoltaic modules in the campus’ buildings, generating an estimated 4 GWh of electricity per annum.
To optimise the system and maximise the energy efficiency, we are working with NAIR CENTER on the design of artificial intelligence algorithms. These algorithms, based on different variables, such as photovoltaic generation, current campus consumption, the energy storage system, the techniques for injecting electricity into the grid, and the price of the electricity market, will allow to predict photovoltaic energy production and control the storage system.
